MAKEUP ARTIST: Makeup artists all over the world have never been out of
business from time immemorial, even people from days of the stone ages has
always reckoned with the artistry of makeup. The only significance difference
between the Stone Age makeup artist and the modern day makeup artists’ lies in
the materials being used and the occasions/events as demanded. Generally
speaking makeup artist bring out the cosmetic beauty in their clients, making
social occasions and photography shoots glamorous events. While makeup retail
businesses can rely on a steady stream of clients, the makeup artist works
solo. The need for a makeup artist may be seasonal and occasional, making it
difficult for the professional to find steady work at times. To overcome this
obstacle and make a good income, these small business owners should introduce
their business into new avenues such as Film Industries, Musical Video
productions, Fashion Shows, Public exhibitions and awareness shows, Public
Figures or celebrities, Brand Marketing and advertising companies, etc. To start this business Create a model
portfolio of 20 to 30 faces. Ask friends and family members to
"model" makeup for you, and then follow up the session with a
photograph. Seek women of different hair colors, eye colors and skin types.
Demonstrate your ability to master different looks. Have the portfolio ready
for any potential clients by creating an album on your I-pad, I phone, Tablets,
Pc or any other presentation gadgets. Similarly, you can create a catalogue
with tags and inscriptions on the different looks and styles you have created, I
will also suggest you create a mini website or blog to showcase your creativity
as this will give you a wider reach because it’s a game of number. To get
started with this kind of business, just enroll in a makeup artistry school for
few weeks, get a list of your “family and friends”(MTN has stopped this package
anyway),do a demo on their faces, do a little advert by either bulk sms or
flyers distribution, pronto! You are on your way to steady source of income; the
beauty of this business is you can combine it with other form of small business
like bead-making, bags made with local fabrics, hairstyling,
etc.

27. POPCORN
BUSINESS: When I was a student at the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro Ogun State
during my HND programme, I thought of ways to earn money as a student without
asking from my parents for the duration of my course. Meanwhile, during my I.T
program, I opted to work with my Aunt who has a Tile/Interior Décor company at
Omole Estate, I was working as an installer of paving stones for clients who
bought Tiles from my Aunt’s company.Thereafter, when I returned for my HND
programme, I discussed with a girlfriend of mine who happens to be in UNAAB
then about a business for student and she advised that I start a POPCORN
business, fortunately for me I had some funds set aside to procure “effizzy” gadgets
for my room but I channeled the fund into the business. The rest is history, I was
able to achieve many things from the income generated daily from sale of
popcorn just within the school environment, at least daily profit for me then
was between N1, 000 – N1, 500, I never bothered to go to anybody for school fees,
course materials, project money or personal upkeeps as the income realized from
sale alone was enough and surplus to care of my needs as a student. You can
start with as little as N20K and you can be generating a daily income of
between N7K-N10K if properly managed. There are so many local machines
available to start with, you can use either the local or foreign corn as well, the
process does not require special training, and all you need is a marketing
effort to reach as many people as possible. Try this today by visiting eatries,
pubs, bus-stops/garages, schools, recreation centers, etc., employ a young
person to manage a machine for you and your daily income is guaranteed.
