Just as former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has described Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s plans as panic-driven, which potrays that the state government is already jittery following outcome of the recent governorship election in Ekiti State. Daniel said Labour Party (LP) has already planned to re-absorb all those who were unjustly sacked by Amosun-led administration when it assumed office in the state by 2015.

The former governor spoke yesterday during the meeting of LP held at Ijebu Central Federal Constituency in Odogbolu.

“It was after I disclosed that all those who were unjustly sacked by the state government would be re-absorbed into workforce of the state civil service that Amosun-led administration hurriedly announced its plans to do same. This to me, assigns that the government is already jittery and must have gone back to the drawing boards by making promises like it did in 2011 without any intention to redeem.”

Daniel added that the stadium in Ijebu Ode, which was initially named after Otunba Mike Adenuga, but later renamed Dipo Dina International Stadium, was part of mischief of the present administration, stressing that it was named after Adenuga because he agreed to maintain both the facility and fund the state-owned Gateway Football Club.

He, therefore, asked that if Amosun-led administration is sincere, why refused to prosecute those arrested for allegedly connection with Dina’s murder three years after.

“Who is the beneficiary of Dipo Dina’s murder and why the hurried renaming of the stadium after him? This calls for probe by all well-meaning security agencies to unravel the mystery surrounding death of the former governorship candidate of Action Congress (AC) in 2007.”

With these pronouncement from the former governor and  other well meaning stakeholders, the cabinet of Governor Amosun is beginning to readjust their political strategies and as well taking their campaigns to the grass root level.

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun as we learnt, has approved the purchase of new cars and furniture allowance, effective from July, to all the 236 councillors in the state.He has also asked them to come up with a proposal for a capital project to be executed in each ward. Amosun, while addressing all the councillors in the state, including the 15 non-APC members, said he was very concerned about the people in the grassroots, whom he described as the bedrock for thriving governance. He challenged the councillors to see themselves as ambassadors of the people at the grassroots and charged them to have clear vision for their wards. He said he is not unmindful of the fact that the organ of government at the grassroots must have necessary incentives, tools and enabling environment to achieve meaningful development, adding that this explains the government’s gesture. The Governor charged them to replicate the rebuilding mission of his administration in their respective wards and explained that the proposed projects would be funded by the government and executed by the councillors.”Governance for me is not all about a party or just the governor but ensuring that we break through political barriers to meet the needs of our people,” he stated. Hon. Akinsola Idris, majority leader of Ward 8, Abeokuta North was grateful to the governor for the good gesture which he said is unprecedented, assuring that they are now poised to take the rebuilding mission to the grassroots. Also, Hon. Akeem Sodunke from Ota said the governor has indeed formed an all inclusive government that is void of discrimination. According to him, no government in the state has ever given the welfare of the people at grassroots priority as the Amosun administration.

Then the war on education from Amosu rages on

The situation of things in OOU at present can best be imagined than felt. While there is no denying the fact that academically and infrastructure-wise, OOU has improved, the reality on ground however is that OOU is sitting on a keg of gun-powder, and the explosion can be very devastating.

First, the contribution of the Ogun state government to the development and maintenance of the university is ZERO. While tuition fee was increased, one would have thought the increment would make the state government pay more attention to the development of the school, but the reverse is the case; not only is the Ogun state government not contributing a dime to the development of the school, it has said it would no longer pay even the salaries of the university staff.

While noticeable changes can be seen in the school since Professor Saburi Adesanya took over the reins of the university (the university now has hostels in mini campus, the hostels in the main campus are nearing completion, a standard university library is under construction, the sports center is fully equipped with standard equipments and standard gym, and various buildings are under construction), the fear is that just like other Vice Chancellors before him failed because their state government left them to face the ‘cold’ alone, the current VC is being set up to fail too. Why? The salaries of the past three months of the university staff were paid with money from the university account; money meant to develop the school and manage the day to day running of the university. Now, if the money supposed to be used for the daily running of the university is used to pay salaries, what happens to the school? Already, reliable information has it that as a result of using university funds to pay salaries, by August 2014, the university would hit rock bottom financially. The implication is that, the university would be forced to jerk up tuition fees even higher, leading to ‘crisis’ in the university which would stem from the inevitable protest against the hike by students.

Now, on the 31st of May 2014, the State Governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun claimed that he had committed N21.6 billion as subvention to its universities in the past three years. Nothing could be further from the truth than that! Despite the fact that Governor Amosun allocated more than 20% of his budget on education, it has just been words on paper; it has failed to translate into reality. The projects being executed so far has been as a result of the magnanimity of the various education bodies and the interventions of TETFund and other bodies, not forgetting the amount raked in from the hike in fees, un-refunded money, etc. Even the commercial cab drivers pay N100 daily as their contribution to the development of the school. The bottom line is that everyone is toiling and struggling, everyone is paying heavily to ensure that this university regains its status as a leading university in this country and beyond; everybody but the state government charged with the responsibility of developing, maintaining and improving the university.

As things stand in OOU, the least amount being paid by each student is N109,000, while some students pay as high as N250,000 per session. The normal system is that, the higher you go, the lower your tuition fee becomes. But in the OOU of today, the higher you go, if you are lucky, you continue to pay the astronomical fees you paid in your Year 1, or if you are not so lucky (like most students), you pay higher fees.

The views from OOU and the comments of OOU students is that they are tired. When students are pushed to the wall, they would be left with no option but to fight back. OOU students have been gathering and meeting; they do not want a breakdown of law and order, they do not want to be seen as ‘troublemakers’, they do not want people to think they do not want the progress of the university, they do not want to be seen as students who love causing trouble, but then, they would not sit still and watch education taken beyond their grasp, they would not sit still and see their ladies become prostitutes so they can pay their way through school, they would not fold their hands while their guys become internet fraudsters so they can even have a chance of surviving the financial demands of the academic community. No, the state government either starts paying attention to tertiary education or it starts preparing to face the wrath of OOU students.

These are days of enlightenment; to underrate students is to toy with failure. OOU students have moved before, and if the Ogun state government does not begin to take them serious by reducing the tuition fees and implementing the “the higher you go, the lower it becomes” method as far as tuition fee is concerned, OOU students are prepared to move again, and this time, the movement may be one that will consume the government and jettison any plans the governor has for 2015. Education is germane to Ogun State students and if the current state government is not prepared to pay attention to it, it should be prepared to leave. Already, the OOU Students Union has issued a missive warning both the state government and the university management of the dangers of their actions, and they have expressed their readiness to lead OOU students in their quest to restore sanity to OOU. The whirlwinds of revolt will begin to rock all the corners of this state until Governor Amosun brings down the hike in tuition fees from the astronomical fees being paid currently, starts funding the school and contributes to the infrastructural development of the university.

Lastly, with the political tide sweeping across the south-west like a tsunami, it will not be a surprise if PDP takes back the darling state of APC as we have witnessed in Ekiti already.

If you've noticed lately that most of the youths in your community seems to be quite obsessed more than usual with sports programs - there could only be one reason for that and it may be something known as sports gambling/betting. The popularity gained by the sports betting industry is absolutely phenomenal and unprecedented. Surveys show that majority of able bodied youths in Nigeria are participating in one sport betting or the other. It became so infectious to the extent that market women, commercial bus operators, okada riders, artisans and even public and private employees now find succor in playing sport bet. 

Hardly would you passed by major streets in Lagos and not come across sport betting shops here and there.

Sports gambling/betting allows players to make calculated bets on teams of their choices. Sometimes, points and odds are added to make sports gambling bets more exciting and challenging. These odds also shows how sports gambling bookies earn their incomes. The disadvantage of participating in sports betting far outweighed the advantages in the real economic sense. According to the religious point of views, these are the various positions on gambling:

"They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and some benefit for men; but the sin is greater than the benefit." (Qur'aan 2:19).

"O believers! Intoxicants and gambling, worshipping stones and divination by arrows are impure, of shaytan's handiwork: refrain from such abomination that ye may prosper. "(Qur'aan 5:90).

As much as we all like to be comfortable in one way or the other, gambling most definitely is focused on the love of money and undeniably tempts people with the promise of quick and easy riches. Our youths have been infected with the “GET RICH AT ALL COST SYNDROME”, we have witnessed different era of quick riches such as; “419”(advance fee fraud), yahoo-yahoo, yahoo plus, money rituals, Baba ijebu(Lotto), etc. The latest trend in town is sport betting, the virus is spreading like wildfire in the forest so much so that it has further increased the level of idleness in our youth. The Government authority who gives legitimacy to the sport bet business is not helping our youth to explore the full potentials of engaging in productive activities devoid of gambling and bets. It is mentioned in the bible 1^st Timothy 6:10 that “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
Also in another verse of the bible Hebrews 13: 5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Consequently, the pitfall associated with sport bet and gambling are enormous, its resultant effect could be:

2.    Laziness

3.    Weakness of faith

4.    Loss of income

5.    It increases crime

6.    It increases the level of desperation to acquire wealth

7.    It ruins precious lives

If you are familiar with trends in Nigeria I bet it will be almost impossible for anyone to have missed the popular event about a RITUALIST den called SOKA in Ibadan, Oyo State south west of Nigeria. It is also not uncommon to hear amongst the street guys/girls, market women, transporters, news media, the resonating sound of SOKA. It was an incident that will forever remain in the archive of Ibadan and Nigeria in parenthesis. Just 2 months back, Nigerians were awoken with the story of an abandoned yard which is being used as a slaughter slab and guillotine yard by the men of the underworld, a mammoth crowd of youths had stormed the abandoned property and discovered what was to be the subject of discourse in both the national and international media. Men and women, young and old, sane and insane, living and dead, malnourished and marooned in a confinement not even fit for a condemned criminal were astonishingly found in this abandoned compound, they were all victims of kidnap for ritual purpose.

Consequent upon the discovery at Soka in Ibadan, other ritual dens in different forms were discovered here and there, a ritualist den was discovered by a fly-over bridge at ewekoro LGA on Abeokuta expressway, another baby factory was discovered at Adigbe also in Abeokuta, same goes for a baby factory at Akute in Ifo LGA of Ogun state, these baby factories are sometimes the “BLACK MARKET” for ritualists who either has money to cough out or the lily livered among them who dread the fear of the long arm of the law as well as jungle justice in the event they got nabbed for kidnap, an elderly woman  selling local gin(paraga and jedi) as a decoy was equally arrested at sango-ota for dealing in human parts which subsequently she claimed they source their products from the cemetery and upon a thorough search on her apartment, a human skull and other human anatomical items were discovered, Just when we thought we had seen and heard enough of this barbarism the news media is awashed with another rumour of reverberating sound of SOKA again in Ado-Odo Ota LGA and Ifo LGA.

Just 2 weeks ago, there was a report in the news media of a particular building in Ayetoro Itele Ota LGA where a boy hawking his wares was quarantined by some people believed to be ritualist and taken inside their house apparently to perpetrate their evil act, unknown to these men who pretend they want to buy from this boy’s wares, another buyer was waiting outside for the boy hawker, upon realizing the boy hawker had stayed too long in the house which report says it’s a bungalow self compound, and in a bid to test his curiosity and surely satisfied he saw the boy entering the compound, the waiting buyer outside decided to knock on the gate of the compound and could not get any response, he immediately alerted residents of the area who promptly besieged the building and discovered it to be another SOKA of sort. What a sinful world we live!

In addition, another unconfirmed story pop-up that some school  kids were also kidnapped in an area called senukoro in lafenwa Ayetoro,Ado-Odo Ota LGA just last week, the kids were said to have been discovered in an uncompleted apartment in the said community. The kidnapped kids were said to have been hypnotized as they could not mutter any word when rescued by the residents. In a bid to do a rendering on the SOKA trend, I was dazed to also discover that just some few streets away from my house another SOKA was unveiled on the 20^th June 2014. It strongly beats my imagination as to how men of the underworld easily perpetrate this heinous crime notwithstanding the level of consciousness of the entire population about their activities. I was on my way home from work on Friday when we discovered there was a traffic snarl at Iju hill by Grail-land, I initially thought it to be the usual go-slow mode or another tanker has fallen into the ditch which is caving in as we welcome the rain downpour, or at most the notorious danfo drivers and some private educated illiterates car owners had forgotten to take their psychotic pills and decided to face the oncoming vehicles from Ajuwon axis thereby resulting in avoidable accidents as we witness on daily basis, alas! It was none of these assumptions the traffic was caused by a detachment of police team and ambulances who were on their way from the SOKA joint to retrieve the bodies of murder victims. I didn’t really get the message at that particular moment until I got to the last bus-stop in Ajuwon where I decided to pick a grocery and I could see people echoing the epic tale of what happened in a hush-hush tone. Since I don’t really fancy the OLOFOFO style of gathering info, I decided to move on, but setting out on Saturday morning I was duly informed by an okada man that a particular area called pipeline in Ajuwon, Ifo LGA has produced another SOKA. He told me there was still a mammoth crowd trying to catch a glimpse and heavy presence of security operatives at the point where the dead bodies of the victims were discovered. At that point, I  began to ponder on the meaning of life and wonder if some people really believe in the hereafter, well your guess is as good as mine, the desperation for affluence and get money rich syndrome has eroded the values we place on our fellow being. If the gods/deities have decided not to accept goats, pigeons, cows, white garments, palm-oil, bitter kola, kola nuts, salt and pepper anymore, why can’t the gods/deities ask for Ferrari, private jets, a mansion, gold/silver, and all other luxury of life instead of human parts and bloods? Even God Almighty does not ask for our blood for atonement or At-Thawba. It’s really high time we define how to restructure our security apparatus and establish intelligence resource centers across every community in Nigeria.

As a final point, if these ugly occurrences are not nipped in the bud, we might start to witness daylight snatching of persons for ritual purposes in the public glare and nobody would still not “GIVE A DAMN” (apology to Mr. President for using that phrase without his permission).

RIVER STATE POLICE COMMAND ARREST OIL BUNKERS WITH FULLY LOADED TRUCKS

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I am glad to welcome you all to the official briefing on our activities to combat crude oil theft and other forms of economic sabotage in Rivers State.

Since my assumption in office, I have intimated you of my strong resolve to fight saboteurs of our Nation’s economic growth. You and I know that the Federal Government of Nigeria is leaving no stone unturned in its fight against crude oil theft and vandalization of oil pipelines.

Our strategies against bunkerers in many parts of the State are beginning to yield positive results and we will constantly re-assess   our operational strategies in tune with the sophistication of the oil thieves. 

On Friday, March 28^th 2014, at about 1030hrs. Information received by the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command that groups of people who specializes on pipe line vandalization are parading within Elelenwo Express Way/Akpajo Eleme Road, Port Harcourt.

Upon the information above, the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Team was immediately drafted to the scene of the oil bunkering and the perpetrators were caught in the act. They had already filled two specially built 55,000 litres trucks with crude oil and were about loading the third one when the Police team arrived at the scene. 

As expected, the arrested suspects tried to evade arrest with tactics and antics, but our men who were very determined to end oil bunkering, especially in Rivers State, overpowered them and impounded their trucks. 

One of the suspects, Jonathan Okon who hails from Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State claimed to be an auto dealer and also confessed that one of the impounded trucks with registration number  XF 869 PHC belong to him.

Bernard Kingsley hails from Okpala town in Isiala Ngwa Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. He attended Okpaka Primary School in Okpaka Local Government Area of Imo State and married with two children. Bernard claimed that the Mack truck, with the registration number XA 905 DEG, which he was arrested with, belongs to a certain Bazil and that he was contracted by one Ugwun Amos (still at large) to be his Conductor. 

Sunny Onouha, born in 1988 and hails from Akarulor town in Ugunabor Local Government Area of Abia State. He is a son of Chineye Onacha. He attended Akawugwu Primary School. He was the driver of one of the impounded trucks with registration number KA 541 KET. 

Let me at this juncture reiterate our strong commitment and resolve to the fight against oil bunkering and other forms of economic sabotage in Rivers State. We are very unrelenting in our bid to put an end to this National menace.

I also want to use this medium to warn and to advise perpetrators of oil theft to desist from their unscrupulous act or be ready to face the full wrath of the law, if they are apprehended.

Rivers state police command set to combat pipelines vandals

The Commissioner of Police in  charge of Rivers State State police command , Tunde Ogunsakin has expressed the readiness of the police in the state as well as that of the officials of the Inspector General of Police Task Force on Pipeline Vandalization  to end the incessant destruction of pipelines in the state .
The CP disclosed this over the weekend , during a courtesy call to the Rivers State regional office of Pipeline and Product Marketing Company  
The CP , who was received by a delegation , led by the  Regional Manager  , Bassey Emmanuel , stated that the era of turning  blind eyes to  the activities of pipeline vandals in Rivers  State is over 
Compol  Ogunsakin also used the occasion to sternly warn unscrupulous members of the society , who indulge in " this act of economic sabotage " to desist from such or face the full wrath of the law . 
The Rivers State police boss also stated that the police in the state are determined to protect human and other resources , that combine to form the activities  of petroleum supply around the state 
He insisted that " nobody " would be treated as a sacred cow , vowing that , whoever is arrested in connection with any act of economic sabotage , especially in the area of pipeline vandalism , would be made to face the full wrath of the law .
The PPMC Regional Manager , while speaking during the visit , decried the activities of vandals in the region and pointed out that acts of pipeline vandalization have greatly affected petroleum supply in the region 
He stated that the region has had to " unnecessarily spend huge amount of money on repairs as a result of the activities of pipeline vandals at all the depots under the region .
Emmanuel also condemned the series of attacks , suffered by officials of the company from heavilly armed vandals , who according to him have constituted a major challenge to the petroleum industry in Nigeria .
The PPMC boss however expressed his confidence in the ability of the police in Rivers State , under the leadership of Tunde Ogunsakin and promised that PPMC would also support the police
